Review: Louis Champagne Bar in Christchurch

A champagne and oyster bar seems highly decadent for Christchurch. How many people in this city would go out of their way to pay top dollar for bubbles and seafood? When we walked into Louis early on a cold, wet Saturday evening, it was apparent that, actually, quite a few would; the bar was bustling and we were lucky to get a table.

Over 50 and broke: How to divorce without financial ruin

Paul Wilson knows better than most how divorce can deplete a person's finances. He has been through three marriage splits.

"First time in 1997, it was about $30,000 for me to fight to minimise my losses," he said.

"As the marriage had been two years and one week, everything had to be halved, even though I bought the house, I paid the mortgage, I paid the utilities and rates and insurances, I bought a car and was paying it off, I owned two cars prior to relationship which I still had.

"Everything got cut in half. Everything seemed very unfair, it was a cash-grab from the other side. I went in with a whole lot of personal items and $40,000 deposit for a house. I spent $30,000 on a lawyer and came out with less than $30,000 after settlement."

Restaurant review: Oikos Hellenic Cuisine, Wellington

In the depths of a Wellington winter, it's all too tempting to dream of escape to that sunny Greek Island taverna of yore – the one where mis-matched rush-woven chairs are set around battered turquoise tables, where there's a peeling calendar on the wall, and beneath the bench of a rumpty open kitchen, the pots and pans are hidden behind an ancient floral curtain.

Outrageous costs and mis-sold loan insurance to be weeded out by new code

A new credit insurance code is designed to stop New Zealanders taking out policies that will not pay out when they need them, that are overpriced or that they have been forced to buy.

The Financial Services Federation (FSF) is to launch a Responsible Credit-Related Insurance Code next week. It covers policies that are sold alongside credit products such as loans and hire-purchase agreements.

It is designed to pay out when someone cannot work due to illness, accident or redundancy but needs to keep paying back the loan.

FSF executive director Lyn McMorran said her organisation was trying to raise awareness of the value of responsibly sold credit insurance, and how it should work for consumers. She said fewer people had it than needed it.

Kids will still be bombarded by junk food adverts under new rules

New rules are set to come into force that crack down on advertising to children, but experts say they do not go far enough.

The Advertising Standards Authority's new children and young people's advertising code comes into effect on July 3. It includes rules about identifying commercial messaging, and restrictions around the depiction of anti-social behaviour, sexual imagery and unrealistic body images and occasional food and beverage advertising.

But Jessica Wilson, a spokeswoman for Consumer NZ, said a major weakness was that it did not apply to product packaging, particularly in relation to junk food.

"[That's] despite the fact marketing targeted at children is widespread on food packaging and often on products high in fat, sugar or salt," she said.

Recipes: They might be fat and knobbly, but yams are yummy

Popeye famously claimed "I yam what I yam", but the vegetable version isn't quite as easy to define. What New Zealanders know as yams originate from South America, where they are known as "oca". What North Americans call yams are in fact varieties of sweet potato – which are different again to what are called yams in Africa and the Caribbean, not to mention the "yams" of Malaysia and Singapore, which are more like taro. Confused? Don't be. These recipes are for those fat, knobbly tubers (the ones that look like giant sunburnt huhu grubs) that are in season right now.

Financial benefits of escaping the rat run and working from home

Life in our cities can feel gruelling, and expensive. Slog into the office, slog home, pay the mortgage, pay the rent.

Complaint upheld against Lotto Mother's Day ad

A complaint made against Lotto's Mother's Day advertisement for encouraging minors to gamble for their loved ones has been upheld by the Advertising Standards Authority.

The advertisement shows a child asleep on a lounge floor in front of a television, with a voiceover that says: "Isn't it amazing how your floordrobe returns itself to your wardrobe? How dinner just appears on your plate every night? And no matter where you fall asleep, you always wake up in bed."

Then the child is shown being carried to bed by his mother before it is revealed the mother has done these things for him. The viewer is then urged to "Thank mum for the magic this Mother's Day".

The complainant said the advertisement was directed at minors, and was concerned that children were being encouraged to gamble by buying a Lotto ticket. It had been screened on TV One at 7.19pm, which the complainant said was a time when children could be watching and could get the idea that gambling was a "a good thing to do for someone you care for".

Food giants resist Aussie call to ban cartoon characters from junk-food ads

Cartoon characters on food packaging such as Kellogg's Tony the Tiger and Toucan Sam are fuelling Australia's childhood obesity crisis and should be restricted, public health experts say.

Researchers at Australia's Obesity Policy Coalition surveyed 186 packaged foods with cartoon characters designed to lure children, and found 52 per cent were classified as unhealthy, based on Food Standards' Nutrient Profiling Scoring Criterion.

They found 87 per cent of snack bars, 61 per cent of cheese snacks and 32 per cent of breakfast cereals featuring colourful cartoons were unhealthy, laden with fat, sugar and/or salt.

They pinpointed Nestle's sweet and sticky "fruit" straps Roll-Ups, Streets Paddle Pop and its Lion, and Kellogg's sugary Frosties, Coco Pops and Froot Loops breakfast cereals as some of the worst offenders.

On the trail of the missing KiwiSavers

The 10-year anniversary of KiwiSaver takes place next month, and still the mystery of the missing KiwiSavers remains unsolved.

KiwiSaver launched on 1 July 2007 in the optimistic period before the Global Financial Crisis shook the world.

It was to be the super scheme that got New Zealand saving, and Labour's back door way of giving Kiwis a tax cut, without them rushing out to spend it on property or consumer goods.

But at the end of June last year, 43 per cent of KiwiSavers weren't making regular contributions.

John Saker: Love of Fiordland evident in Wet Jacket Wines' label

It's usual for a wine's back story to be based around a strong connection to a place. Wet Jacket Wines does that, though with a difference. You won't find any vines in Fiordland's Wet Jacket Arm. Motueka cafe's syringe-injected doughnuts selling like hot cakes

Smoked meat is their bread and butter, but it's the doughnuts bringing home the bacon for one Motueka eatery.

Open for just over a year in the old Hot Mama's Cafe premises on High St, owner and chef of The Smoking Barrel Josiah Smits has created a menu based around American-style slow cooked and smoked dishes.

However, it is the popularity of its hand-made doughnuts that has created the biggest buzz.

"It's taken off and become a bit of a craze and we've had people coming from all over the place, just coming over to get these doughnuts," he said.

Recipe: Kabuli pulao

Ayesha Slimankhil is originally from Saudi Arabia, but on marrying an Afghani man and moving to Afghanistan, she learnt to cook the traditional dishes of her adopted country, such as this famous rice dish named after the capital.

Ayesha used a Saudi packaged spice mix called Kabssa Rice Spices, which is available at Lotus Supermarket and Shefco, both on Stoddard Rd in Auckland's Mt Roskill.

The spice mix outlined in the recipe can be used instead, or you could substitute with 3 tablespoons of ras el hanout.

Sorry, that's not traumatic enough - ombudsman warns of confusion over insurance

New Zealanders are discovering the hard way that just because something is traumatic, it does not mean their trauma insurance policies will pay out.

Trauma insurance is a type of cover that pays a lump sum when someone is diagnosed with a severe illness or suffers a serious accident.

Each policy will have a different range of conditions it covers but it is usual for things such as heart attacks, serious cancer, stroke, injuries resulting in paralysis or blindness and burns to be included.

It is often sold as ideal protection for customers who need to cover extra costs if they become seriously ill.

Ask Kevin: Should we sign up with more than one agent?

Q: We're planning to put our house on the market in spring. Is it best to use one agency to sell the property, or will we get a better result with multiple agency representation?

A: "Many hands make light work". "The more the merrier". "Two heads are better than one". There are many old adages that support the idea of using more than one real estate agent or agency to market and sell a property.

It has become less common to see properties festooned with a variety of "for sale" signs, but whether you choose to work with one agency or several is all a matter of personal choice. Either way, there are a few important things to bear in mind.

Both options require the signing of a legal contract between you and the agency involved.

Magician shares 6 ways illusion and misdirection can help you get ahead at work

When a magician is on stage, they are the most honest person you'll ever meet. They tell you they are going to fool you, and then they do.

This is the observation of the famous stage magician James Randi, who has made a career out of exposing con-men and "quacks."

In a new book Spellbound, magician and puzzle master David Kwong explores the ideas of illusion and persuasion, and gives the reader tools with which to help them get ahead in their lives. However, he is clear from the beginning that it is not a handbook on how to deceive people.

"I think these principles can be used in a dark way," Kwong told Business Insider. "And I try to arm the reader against con-men like that."

Seized Auckland Masala properties net $8m after tax evasion settlement

Three properties associated with the Masala Indian restaurant chain have netted almost $8 million at auction.

The three properties, in Auckland's Mt Eden, Birkenhead and Stanmore Bay, were sold this week after being seized as part of a $34m restraining order granted over more than 30 properties linked to the chain back in 2015.

The chain reached an $8m settlement with Inland Revenue and police earlier this year.

5 of the best pie recipes to try this winter

Recipe: lamb, fennel & spinach pie

This pie can be made as one large pie or, as in the photo at right, 12 small ones, and I've provided directions for both options. The filling can be made a day ahead, as can the bread dough if it's put in the fridge to rise slowly overnight. Once you have made the pie or pies, it's best to cook within the hour as the dough will overproof while sitting.

LAMB, FENNEL & SPINACH PIE

Makes 12 individual or 1 large pie for 6-8 / Preparation 40 minutes plus rising time / Cooking 90 minutes

For the filling

700g lamb leg steaks or a casserole cut, cut in 2cm dice flour for dusting
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 onion, sliced
2 fennel bulbs, thinly sliced, fronds reserved and chopped
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
2 teaspoons fennel seeds
Grated zest and juice of 1 orange
½ cup white wine
1½ cups chicken or vegetable stock
100g spinach, shredded
2 teaspoons cornflour mixed with 2 tablespoons water (if necessary)

Lightly dust the lamb with flour seasoned with salt and freshly ground pepper. Heat 1 tablespoon of the oil in a wide saucepan and brown the lamb.

Remove from the pan, add the onion and fennel with the remaining oil. Cook gently until soft. Add the garlic, fennel seeds and orange zest and cook for another minute.

Recipe: Chicken & leek prassopitta

This recipe is based on a Greek leek and feta pie and uses one of the simplest pastries you can make from scratch – it can be mixed together in a bowl in a few minutes and rolls out easily. You can make the pie the day ahead, keeping it refrigerated on the tray, covered, until ready to bake.

CHICKEN & LEEK PRASSOPITTA

Serves 8 / Preparation 30 minutes / Cooking 40 minutes

For the olive oil pastry
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
¼ cup olive oil

Mix together the flour and salt in a bowl. Add the oil and Ã‚½ cup water and stir with a wooden spoon, adding a little extra water a tablespoon at a time if necessary to bring the dough together. Take the dough out of the bowl and knead together. Cover with plastic wrap and set aside for an hour.

For the filling & to assemble
2 tablespoons olive oil, plus extra for brushing
1 large leek, halved, thinly sliced
2 cloves garlic, sliced
600g skinless chicken thighs, cut into 3cm pieces
3 tablespoons flour
1½ cups chicken stock plus extra if necessary
¼ cup pitted olives, chopped (I used Kalamata)
100g feta, crumbled
½ cup mint leaves, thinly sliced
sesame seeds to scatter
mashed potato to serve (optional)

Heat the oil in a wide saucepan, add the leek and garlic and cook gently for 5-10 minutes or until soft.

Add the chicken and cook for a few minutes, then sprinkle over the flour and cook for a couple more minutes. Add the stock and cook for 10 minutes or until cooked through, adding a little extra stock if necessary.

Stir in the olives, feta and mint leaves and season to taste. Allow to cool before using.

Preheat the oven to 200°C. Cut the dough into 2 balls, 1 slightly larger than the other. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the smaller piece very thinly to about 2mm thickness and 30cm diameter. Place on a baking paper-lined oven tray.

Pile the filling onto the dough, leaving a 2cm edge.

Roll out the bigger piece of dough, making it slightly larger than the first. Lightly brush the edge of the bottom piece with water, cover with the larger dough piece and crimp the edges together.

Bank staff may be forced to sell debt to customers who can't pay - union

New Zealanders are being put at risk by bank staff who are being forced to flog loans and credit cards to meet their sales targets, the union representing them says.

First Union is launching its Service before Sales campaign in Wellington on Monday, calling for the country's big banks to implement a plan to end debt sales targets as soon as possible.

The campaign launch comes two months after the release of Australia's Sedgwick Report, which recommended 21 changes to transform banking culture from "sales first" to "service first".

The major Australian banks, which own the big four in this country, agreed to adopt the report's recommendations.

Millions of American adults think chocolate milk comes from brown cows

Seven per cent of all American adults believe that chocolate milk comes from brown cows.

If you do the maths, that works out to 16.4 million misinformed, milk-drinking people, according to a nationally representative online survey commissioned by the Innovation Center of US Dairy.

The equivalent of the population of Pennsylvania (and then some!) does not know that chocolate milk is milk, cocoa and sugar.

But while the survey has attracted snorts and jeers from some corners - "um, guys, [milk] comes from cows - and not just the brown kind," snarked Food & Wine - the most surprising thing about this figure may actually be that it isn't higher.

NZ has perfect conditions for a house price drop - so where is it?

Conditions are right for a property price drop, but so far values are holding stubbornly firm.

Usually, for prices to stall, you need a change in the supply and demand equation. That means fewer buyers or more properties to choose from, lessening competition.

The latest Real Estate Institute figures show that scenario is playing out, in Auckland in particular.

The number of sales in May was down 27.5 per cent in Auckland compared to the year before, and 13.6 per cent across the rest of the country.
