Bach Living: A Waiheke Island beachfront retreat.

For years, Bob Mcmillan resisted the pull of Waiheke Island. It was his wife of 50 years, Kerry, who urged him to take the fateful trip to the island in 2009, which resulted in them purchasing their beachfront home.

At my place: Celebrity chef Brett McGregor's "rough round the edges" home

It should come as no surprise that celebrity chef and former Cantabrian Brett McGregor's go-to dish at home is a Thai creation - Larb Gai. After all it's his expertise with Asian food which helped him take out the title of New Zealand's first MasterChef and inspired his latest book Chop Chop: Asian-Inspired Family Favourites.

Lynda Hallinan: I'm going vegetarian - except for bacon butties or when hubby cooks

If you woke up this morning beset with regrets, not to mention a churning stomach and a thumping head, don't blame that last round of tequila shots at 3am: blame those do-gooding ancient Babylonians. They're the ones who, thousands of years ago, invented the silly idea that we should begin every year with a list of noble resolutions: paying off debt, resowing the grain fields, sacrificing stuff to the gods and remembering to water the hanging gardens more often.

5-minute gardener: What to do this weekend

EDIBLES
Although the adage says plant garlic on the shortest day and harvest it on the longest, you might be better waiting till the tops start to die off before picking. Dig up by first loosening the soil with a fork and pulling up the bulbs by their tops. Trim the fibrous roots off. To dry, hang in a dry place (in the sun if you like). This will take at least a couple of weeks. Store like this or in string bags.

How to nail New Year's Eve at home

Ah, New Year's Eve, a night of crushing disappointment, shattered dreams and regrettable trysts. It's the one night of the year the home-bound feel the need to party, which makes it the one night of the year you should definitely stay home. Apart from Valentine's Day. Nobody should go out on Valentine's Day. And the thing is, with a bit of careful planning, you can pretty much nail NYE without leaving your house. None of it's rocket surgery or brain science. It's just having the nous to know what to do, when to do it and Who to Invite.

How to be the best barbecue host this summer

Barbecuing gives us a lift from being, and cooking, in the outdoors. We may only be a couple of steps from the usual dining table, but it's enough change to be exciting and spirit lifting. The air, the light, the smells, the flavours are all different.

Barbecuing is a performance too. Expectations are high. Everyone has a memory of something wonderful they had at a barbecue once that was smoky and flame-licked. They want that again. Everyone also dreads meeting that raw in the middle, burnt on the outside sausage, they had once.

So the barbecue cook is under pressure to deliver. On the upside, hardly any other hosting event can win you as much respect and gratitude if you pull it off.

The battle for Thursday night: Food delivery apps change the way Australians eat

There's a point in the week when even dedicated cooks get fed up with making meals at home.

Weekends are when people "play MasterChef" or go out, says Martin Kneebone, managing director of Australian food market research and analysis firm FreshLogic.

At the start of the working week, people tend to be organised and cook at home. "By Thursday, you've had enough," Kneebone said. "You want a break."

That's where food ordering apps come in.

At my place: The Block stars Alex and Corban's family beach house

The winners of The Block 2014, and owners of their own homeware store Alex and Corban Walls, clearly know interiors.

It's not all that surprising that their family beach house in Whananaki, Northland, is refined casual, with an envious hanging chair in the corner of the sunny living room, that Alex says is the best spot in the house.

But it's not quite finished. The pair have plans to install floor-to-ceiling windows to make the most of their picturesque surrounds.

This summer they're heading out of the city to relax in the sun and entertain with friends, "we sit around the dining table all night chatting, laughing and eating great food," says Alex.

Describe your house in two sentences:

Our family beach house is a low lying modular house set among native planting on the estuary in Whananaki North. Clad with native Douglas Fir for its natural durability and floor to ceiling glass windows for us to enjoy the panoramic view of the water and surrounding hills.

Storing the Christmas spirit: How to keep tidings festive throughout the year

People around the world look forward to Christmas as a time to enjoy the finer things in life - meals prepared with care and shared with loved ones around a common table, a home twinkling with lights, the scents of pine and spice wafting through the hallways, an excuse to revel in contentment, and be grateful.

My favourite space: Christmas lunch on the verandah

If only, Barbara Breen wishes, the kauri floorboards of her 120-year-old villa could speak. This house could rattle off quite a history: built as a wedding gift for the son of the sheriff of Auckland; bought by the wealthy Rothschilds of New York in the 1960s as a safe haven from the threat of nuclear war; inhabited by the squatters and shady drug cultivators in the 70s; then rescued by a Kiwi aeronautical engineer, who'd helped to solve NASA's space shuttle problems.

Which wineries to visit in Marlborough. Fiona Fenwick's top picks

It's that time of year when the draw of glorious summertime in Marlborough attracts friends and family from all over the country and often overseas. Living as we do in some of the most stunning surroundings in New Zealand, largely decorated with our bountiful vineyards, one of the first questions asked is normally, "which wineries should we visit?" "I love gin, a gin and tonic is one of the best drinks you could ever order, I think," says Madeleine Tate from across the rosy-pink tiled bar at Kindred, a chic and breezy new eatery in Auckland's Wynyard Quarter.

Tate is 27, softly spoken and quite different from the showy, waistcoat-wearing, Tom-Cruise-in-Cocktail bottle spinning mixologist stereotype.

But it's her cocktails that are commanding the attention. Tate recently took out the national title at the Beefeater MIXLDN Global Bartender Competition, which will see her travel to the international finals in London in February to take on some of the world's top mixologists.

Christmas feasts from around the world

Christmas to me, smells like biscuits and mulled wine. I grew up in Germany where we wrap up warm and stroll through Christmas markets drinking hot wine from clay mugs and nibbling on different types of spiced biscuits.

"There is traditionally a steep rise in burglary-related claims in the December to January period, with the last 21-day festive season claims costing $414,000 per day," said ICNZ chief executive Tim Grafton.

Auckland's top 10 highest-valued homes

Even in Auckland's super-pricey housing market, some properties stand out.

Property market analysts ReLab have done the sums, and found what they think are the 10 most valuable homes in Auckland - and their combined value estimations push a mind-boggling $300 million.

Owned by rich-listers, businessmen and internet tycoons alike, these houses are valued between $20 million to $54m each, and represent the very top slice of all 470,000 occupied dwellings in Auckland.

Their values were estimated by Auckland-based property market analysts ReLab, which calculates estimations using its own algorithms, in mid December.

Grand Designs UK reveal: Architect's own home voted RIBA House of the Year

Every year, Grand Designs guru Kevin McCloud showcases the shortlist of houses for the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) House of the Year award. And then he does the grand reveal on his show.

And this year, the House of the Year award went to architect Richard Murphy for his own family home in Edinburgh.

Murphy's house is a light-filled modern home built in an established neighbourhood of terrace houses. The judging panel describes its a "delightful essay in architecture".

"It speaks to its context with direct references to the Georgian terraces, and with a clever change of scale that is at once deferential and powerfully striking in the street."

The unfolding story of the Champagne region isn't all fizz and fun times. As any Champenois will tell you, there have been dark days aplenty. Consider these randomly selected episodes: the riots following the 19th century phylloxera scourge; the harvesting of grapes under shellfire during the Great War; the Germans arriving uninvited in 1940 and looting two million bottles in the first few weeks of the invasion alone; the collapse of important markets at different times (that includes the death of Winston Churchill, who was a market all on his own).
