Restaurant Review: Leinster Rd Bistro, Christchurch

Calm. Quiet. These are the first two things I jotted down on a Wednesday night visit to the Leinster Rd Bistro. It reads a bit boringly doesn't it? But believe me this is high praise.

It had been a frazzled kind of Wednesday, one of those days when we had too many balls in the air. The night was wet, the bistro was hard to spot among all the medical buildings, and we'd had to circle around trying to find a park.

The last thing in the world we wanted was to end up in a place with "doof doof" music thumping out of a speaker just above our heads.

How to use rocks as a feature in your garden

Want a focal point for your garden? Or perhaps your looking for a cost-effective way to add character to a sloping plot? Rocks could be the answer.

Rocks improve with age as moss and lichen grow on their surfaces and plants around them. With time they disappear into a garden setting, so think big, and don't worry if they seem huge when first placed on site.

Most regions of New Zealand have local rock, so it's often best to use what is at hand. From an aesthetic point of view, it'll fit right in.

Do it better than your local: how to cook the perfect hot chip

In the annals of world cuisine, has there ever been a thing so abject yet so wonderful as the chip? The chip รข€“ the hot chip, not the crisp, its bastard cousin once removed รข€“ is essential. It is the culinary handmaiden to steak, to fish, to the footy. Christchurch brewery Harrington's marks 25 years in the businees

New Zealand's largest family-owned brewery, Harrington's of Christchurch, celebrated its 25th birthday last week. Having owned and run pubs for almost two decades, John and Val Harrington were exasperated by the Lion/DB duopoly and decided to start their own brewery. The Harringtons' first brewery, a 1000-litre system made up of old dairy vessels, was installed at the Kilmore St site of Christchurch's oldest brewery, Ward's. Today, that same site รข€“ minus many of the original brewery buildings, which were destroyed in the earthquakes รข€“ is home to Pomeroy's pub and Stainless Brewing Company.

Growing orchids outside in NZ is easier than you think

Orchids are one of the oldest and most diverse plant families, so it's no wonder there are plenty that will grow well outside in Kiwi gardens.

Though most prefer milder parts of the country, many are moderately frost-hardy if you site them carefully.

Raising them off the ground is a good first step, not only to show off the blooms but also to protect them from frost in winter. The embrace of an evergreen tree rather than a deciduous one is another good way to cosset your orchids from the cold รข€“ the shelter from rain being as important as keeping them from getting too cold.

Garden of the week: Banks Peninsula garden a "haven away from home"

In 2008, a group of English High Court judges deemed the Oxford Dictionary definition of a garden ("an enclosed piece of ground devoted to the cultivation of flowers, fruit or vegetables") to be inadequate. The essence of a garden, they proclaimed, included "the relationship between the owner and the land and the history and character of the land and space". Nowhere could this be more true than at Annandale, Mark and Jacqui Palmer's property in remote Pigeon Bay on Banks Peninsula, which is steeped in history and has been moulded both by the elements and its inhabitants.

GET CHITTING POTATOES

Lay seed potatoes in a container, such as an egg tray or carton, in a dry place. When the sprouts reach at least one centimetre long, they may be planted, carefully, so as not to break or damage any sprout.

Any early potatoes you have already chitted, with sprouts at least a 1cm long, may be planted now in containers in a warm, frost-free spot such as a verandah. About three per standard bucket is a good rule of thumb. Any container used must have good drainage. Two-thirds fill it with well-rotted compost and garden soil and plant the tuber about 12-15cm deep.
