LOL Surprise doll tops Christmas wish lists thanks to unboxing craze

With a clear wrapper, a plastic shell, and layers of packaging inside, one of this year's most popular children's Christmas gifts has been labelled the "toy of your capitalist nightmares".

Their popularity stems from the bizarre online craze of "unboxing", which involves people filming themselves opening presents or pristine packaged goods and then posting the video online.

Recipe: Sam Mannering's super-simple canapes

I worry that the very mention of the word "canape" hints at the promise of patronising events with bad bubbly and complicated-looking things in vol-au-vents. I do my best to counter that by being as simple as possible. This recipe may seem too easy, but, at this time of year, I don't think that's a bad thing. Asparagus halves wrapped in prosciutto and grilled off. Oysters in the half-shell with lemon. Oatcakes with a bit of blue cheese and pear. Thin strips of rare cold roast beef rolled up with a bit of horseradish and herb. Cubes of roast pork belly with a dollop of hoi-sin. It needn't be complicated.

Eight investments where you could have made a fortune

If only Melanie Pedersen had not had to pay rent while she was living in Sydney four years ago, she might have quite a different life now.

While working as a public relations freelancer in 2013, the Bay of Plenty woman contracted to a Bitcoin exchange in Sydney. They offered her a choice: Six Bitcoin or A$200 cash a week.

Each Bitcoin is today worth $23,976. Pedersen estimates she would have the equivalent of $2.88 million now if she had opted to be paid in the cryptocurrency.

But she needed the cash to pay her rent. "I didn't even consider it. They said this or that and I said cash please. It was only the other day I did some calculations – I don't feel bad about it, it is what it is. I was only 23 and I needed the money. Someone said you would have been out on the streets but you'd have lots of Bitcoin – now I'd own the street."

The psychology of shopping - how marketers nudge you to buy

OPINION: Many people see marketing as a form of manipulation, particularly around Christmas and the other retail bonanzas: Easter, Valentine's Day, Mothers' Day and Fathers' Day.

But rather than simply trying to trick people, the masters of marketing know it's much easier to understand and work with innate human flaws.

By drawing on a plethora of psychological and sociological research, marketers subtly give us permission to buy and not to think too much, or too deeply, about why we're buying.

Not thinking all the time is a very efficient way for us to get by. It conserves energy, and allows us to live relatively easily by responding to our psychological predispositions, social norms, and general cognitive imperfections.

Avoid these pitfalls to improve your retirement

OPINION: Retirement is not like it used to be. People are living longer, investment returns are lower and there is much more uncertainty in the world in just about every sphere you can think of.

New strategies are called for to deal with these changes. Retirement should be the best stage of life – a time when you can enjoy life to the max, free of worry. However, many retirees make mistakes with managing their money which mean they aren't able to achieve the kind of retirement they deserve.

A 65-year-old can now on average expect to live to around 90 and many will live longer than this. If you want to last 30 or so years to be the most extraordinary time of your life, here are the key mistakes to avoid.

Fiona Smith updates classic Cuisine chicken and pesto recipe

Pesto was everywhere in the 90s – it wowed us with its punchy summer flavours and added pizzazz to cooking with ease – and it's still pretty popular. But as one who has never been fond of the ready-made versions, I say enough. Beautiful fresh summer basil leaves, pine nuts and parmesan add the pesto flavours to this salad, and go well with Julie Biuso's original pan-fried chicken. I like to leave the skin on the breasts and add a little parmesan to the flour for even more flavour.

Auckland man shows how to challenge your home's rating valuation

Auckland homeowner and landlord Gary Osborne is challenging the $895,000 rating valuation on one of his properties.

He's not planning on selling them any time soon, so he doesn't feel he's shooting himself in the foot by seeking a lower valuation.

He just wants to make sure he's only charged his fair share of rates.

His property in the West Auckland suburb of Henderson went up from $490,000 in 2014 to $895,000 in Auckland Council's latest round of rating valuations.

Cuisine editor Kelli Brett recalls her mothers incredible cookery

This time last year, as we put our January issue for 2017 to bed, I had not long returned from my mum's funeral in Western Australia. It was, understandably, a difficult time. Straw habit needs to be broken to wean us off plastic

It costs $100 to buy 15,000 plastic straws but that money will only buy 1800 biodegradable paper straws.

This is the financial hit faced by hospitality businesses trying to join the anti-plastic straw movement which is gaining ground across the country.

But Hospitality New Zealand says the answer is to stop offering straws with every drink.

Instead, it says only drinks that need straws should get them - like milkshakes - and otherwise straws should be available only on request.
