Dry lands: Australian garden styles you'll love to steal

Summer is here - and it looks like it's going to be a warm one. So it makes sense to plant with these conditions in mind.

Weather forecasters are predicting a weak La Nina, which means warm, wet conditions in the north and hot, dry weather on the east coast of both islands.

Community comes together to renovate chronically ill girl's home

A Nelson family with a chronically ill teen is in disbelief over the community's generosity after tradies and volunteers joined forces to revamp their family home.

It has taken 10 days, more than 80 workers and close to $55,000 worth of materials to revamp the Perrone family's Nelson home - but the renovation has also fixed the family's spirit.

Tears of joy and disbelief rolled down the cheeks of mother Elizabeth Perrone and her family of when they walked through their newly-renovated house for the first time on Tuesday night.

The family of eight has spent the past 23 years living in the run-down property looking after their chronically ill daughter.

Restaurant review: Ombra in Wellington

Three years on, and the scuff-marks on the bar stools are rounding out the lived-in look that Ombra so carefully cultivated on day one, with the aid of crumbling plaster and a patinated ceiling.
I've always admired how Ombra manages to evoke a back-street bar in Venice, without a single direct reference. In place of the plastic gondolas and posters of the Grand Canal are the original 1922 Deco leadlight windows, along with newly installed period linen curtains, into which somebody's nonna has repeatedly embroidered the word "ombra".
Extending in an L-shape around its kitchen and dominating bar, Ombra is a cramped little space with tiny tables pushed so close together that you are privy to more of your neighbours' conversations than perhaps you might like. But in a sense, that intimacy forms part of the attraction: you call in for a few rowdy drinks and the Venetian version of tapas called cicchetti, then you're out again within the hour.

Lynda Hallinan's top and flop crops in November

OPINION: When does your garden put its prettiest face on? I think mine looks its freshest best in late spring, when the leaves finally return to the hornbeam hedges that enclose my vege garden.

Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) makes a wonderful formal hedge, but has the strange habit of holding on to its brown autumn leaves, rather than letting them fall. This means it looks dead all winter, so its spring resurrection is all the more dramatic.
