Sicily has always been a strategic island, so was fought over by various Mediterranean powers. A silver lining from all this conflict has to be the food. The Romans, Arabs, Spanish, Italians and Greeks all brought their unique flavours to the island, resulting in an early and delicious example of culinary fusion.
