What Tony Robbins says you can do daily, monthly and yearly to be more successful

Performance coach Tony Robbins has seven clients he works with on an individual basis, and each pay him US$1 million (NZ$1.3 million) annually. Tickets to his intensive seminars can run for a few thousand dollars, and participants get jam-packed days of group and personal training.

There are some aspects of Robbins' method for personal development, however, that don't require hours of discussions and introspection, and they don't cost anything, either.

Robbins shared some of this advice recently in a peek at his "Unleash the Power Within" event, a three-and-a-half day intensive course designed to give participants an action plan for overhauling their lives.

Robbins streamed over an hour of his talk in front of a sold out crowd in New Jersey's Prudential Center over Facebook Live, in which he broke down an annual, monthly, and daily exercise.

* Women of Influence: Getting knocked back is a big part of success

It's worth noting that while you may choose to spend money on the first two exercises, it's totally unnecessary. You can also immediately implement the exercises into your life.

Litigation loans: the high price of civil justice

"Not a hope in hell," says John Cameron.

Cameron is one of over 200 Kiwifruit orchardists suing the Ministry for Primary Industries over losses following the devastating outbreak of the Psa disease in 2010 they believe was caused by imported pollen.

But the case would never have gone ahead without the case being bankrolled by litigation funder LPF.

Solar battery packs may have to be stored outside under proposed new rules

A new proposed battery safety standard would stop the installation of solar power systems' battery packs, which have been described as the "future of energy".

Consultation is open on the standard, which would ban lithium ion batteries inside a dwelling, under the eaves of a house or within a metre of it. Installed beyond that distance, the batteries would have to be in a fireproof enclosure.

Companies such as Vector are promoting battery packs, such as Tesla's Powerwall, as part of solar energy systems.

Simple steps to help increase your chance of franchise success

Electrician Glenn Fulton had wanted to go into business on his own for years. But his wife, Helen, resisted. "I kept saying no as I like the safety of having a wage each week," she said.

But then they found an advertisement on Trade Me, selling franchises of GoFox Electrical.

"He met up with the franchisor and it sounded really good. A bit safer and more support than doing it ourselves. He had to go through some pretty thorough checks, psychometric testing, checked all our references," Helen Fulton said.

That was nine months ago. Now, the couple meets with the rest of the franchisees three times a year for training, and aside from a few rules such as which supplier to use, the business is theirs to run.

She knew immediately that the dream trip was over and the only thing to do was head home. The accommodation was cancelled and flights changed - at a cost of $500 each. "Everyone said it's lucky you've got insurance."

But it was not long before she started to feel that was not so lucky at all. Despite having paid $540 each for full, comprehensive cover with AA Travel, she found she was barely able to claim more than they had paid for the policies.

The insurer wanted two years of her mother's medical records to determine whether there was a pre-existing condition that would preclude her claim completely.

Ten banking mistakes and how to avoid them

Twenty-five years ago, bank customers raised complaints about cheques and passbooks. Now they are worried about online banking, apps, and mobile payment technologies, says Banking Ombudsman Nicola Sladden.

But she said the goal for her office, which has been operating for a quarter of a century this month, had remained the same - to promote higher standards in the banking sector, and build consumer trust.

Over the past year, the scheme received 2727 inquiries, and dealt with 619 complaints and 153 disputes.

Most of the disputes were about the country's biggest bank, ANZ, followed by Westpac.

Token vegetarian mains that make a restaurant look lazy

OPINION: It's not a promising start for vegetarians when the restaurant doesn't have a vege main on the menu, just a line that says something like: Ask about our special vegetarian options.

If they can't be bothered to name something, it says a lot about the effort that will go into making it.

Clean spending: How you can put your finances on a 5:2 diet

Last weekend, I set out on a mission to buy nursery essentials for my firstborn, who arrives in December.

I came home not with baby grows and a breast pump, but with six champagne flutes and an expensive but on trend salad bowl. Given the drinking limitations surrounding pregnancy, the former was perhaps an ill-advised purchase. As for the salad bowl, I'd argue an injection of Scandi-chic is essential in any home.

But then my spending habits have never been particularly shrewd. I'll opt for artisan bread over sliced, hop into an Uber instead of taking the bus, and every time I embrace a new interest, I'll convince myself I must have the accompanying paraphernalia before I can possibly commit.

I start each month vowing to live within my means, but before payday comes around I'll have dipped into my savings to fund my bon viveur lifestyle. The shameful truth is, I'm 33 and have never managed to stick to a budget.

Millennial Money: Let's start with KiwiSaver

Millennials are accused of being unwise with money. Four young Stuff business reporters will share the fruits of their knowledge - and we're not talking avocados.

Millennials. The broadly brushed 18 to 35-year-old cohort of the late 1980s and 90s aren't all unimpressed, moody hipsters.

Peculiarly, some of us also share the same responsibilities of rent, bills and subscriptions as any other generation previous (albeit with Netflix instead of the TV Guide), so when we need to save, we save.

We're the first to admit that we may not be the best to save long term - you know retirement isn't the first thing we think about when we're burdened with student loans - but that's where the Government is lending a helping hand with KiwiSaver.

Coromandel publican sells up after on-going Thames Coast Rd closures

Tapu publican Bruce Efford has sold his business after on-going Thames Coast Rd closures cost him about $80,000 in earnings.

The major Coromandel road has been regularly closed by more than 100 slips since March.

However, Efford said it was lack of communication between New Zealand Transport Agency, the contractors working on State Highway 25 and the public that had cost him his business.

"The weather and the slips you can expect, but it's when they tell you the road's closed and it's not. What's happening is that people are too scared to come down," he said.

Over 50 and broke: Have you left it too late to start saving?

There would be few New Zealanders who have missed the memo that we should be saving for retirement.

KiwiSaver, which just ticked off its 10th anniversary, has got many of us saving for retirement in an organised way for the first time in our lives.

But what if you're nearer retirement, and have not started to think about saving for it, yet?

Financial experts say while it's better to start earlier in life, it is never too late to save for your retirement.

The 123 Mart found guilty on 17 charges of unsafe toys and clothing

Rattles, trumpets and wind-up snakes are some of the toys a budget retailer has been found guilty of selling with choking hazards.

The 123 Mart Limited was found guilty in the Auckland District Court on 17 charges under the Fair Trading Act on July 7, and will be sentenced in October.

Judge Rob Ronayne found 123 Mart sold about 9000 of seven types of toys with small parts that were choking hazards for young children.

After the Commerce Commission charged 123 Mart last year, the retailer chose a defended hearing on 22 charges, and five charges were dismissed.

Don't let buying your first house ruin your KiwiSaver retirement savings

If you are planning to withdraw money from KiwiSaver to pay for a first home, the sooner you do it, the better.

Three thousand KiwiSaver members withdrew money from their accounts to buy a house in May, down from a spike of 6000 in March.

In the year to June 2016, the most recent full year for which data is available, more than 25,000 savers made use of the option.

People can withdraw all their savings, their employer's contributions and the Government's member tax credits to buy a house, provided they have been in the scheme at least three years and have not owned a house before, or are in the same financial position as a first-home buyer.

Consumer NZ warns about new 'layby' options

Consumer New Zealand is warning shoppers they need to know their rights when using new payment options marketed as "layby".

Two buy now, pay later payment services have launched in New Zealand in the past three months: Laybuy.com and Part Pay. Trade Me's Afterpay will also be available in coming months.

The services offer shoppers the option of receiving goods immediately but paying them off in instalments, interest-free, over a number of weeks.

But Consumer New Zealand chief executive Sue Chetwin said calling the service layby was misleading and it would be taking the issue to the Commerce Commission.

Susan Edmunds: Is KiwiSaver just making the rich richer?

OPINION: KiwiSaver has had many successes in its 10 years of operation. But its biggest failing may be that it is increasing the divide between those who are "better off" and those who are not.

The retirement savings scheme now has almost 3 million members and $40 billion under management.

But in 20 years' time it could be quite apparent that those who have done the best out of it are people who were set for a more comfortable retirement, anyway.
