Many KiwiSaver members don't understand how credits work

Each year the Government offers free money. But some people still don't know what it is or how to claim it.

A member tax credit (MTC) of $521 is available to all KiwiSaver members, aged 18 to 65,  who contribute at least $1042 into their accounts each financial year. They do not have to do anything else to claim it – KiwiSaver providers handle the process of getting the money into their accounts.

But the Commission for Financial Capability says not enough is being done to make people aware of this key KiwiSaver benefit, and to make sure they get it.

Almost half the KiwiSaver members polled in a survey by Inland Revenue had not heard of a member tax credit.

Sellers' ability to block inspections catching investors out: Property manager

Property investors are being left vulnerable by a loophole that means they sometimes miss out on properly checking properties before they buy them.

Kevin Edmunds, of property managers Quinovic in Thorndon, Wellington, said he had dealt with a number of investor buyers who had been caught out.

Usually, property purchasers have a right to an inspection before a deal settles, to ensure that there are no problems with the property that need to be fixed.

But the exception to that is when a property is sold with a tenant in place. Edmunds said that would apply to up to 35 per cent of properties in the market.

Recipe: Sam Mannering's juicy paper-wrapped roast chicken

I don't need to go on too much about the joys and relative ease of a good roast chook. This method is lovely because there is no chance of the bird drying out. Try and use as interesting a mix of mushrooms as you can find; if you're lucky enough to get your hands on some truffle, go for it. Of course, you don't need to add bread to the stuffing; you might want to use cooked puy or green lentils instead. A bit of bacon, prosciutto or speck wouldn't go amiss either. Go for a Bostock's chicken – the best by a country mile.

Tyre insurance? You have to be joking

OPINION: Keeping the wheels turning is an expensive business.

Cars are second only to houses when it comes to sucking money from your wallet.

Which is why I wasn't best pleased at an attempt to get me to buy tyre insurance.

Yes, in getting two new tyres for the car, the bill (a bit sneakily) included a surprise cost of $8.50 per tyre for Road Hazard Tyre Insurance.

Time to ditch 'Blackadder' housing policies, academic says

Construction industry expert professor John Tookey has likened Government policies to tackle the housing crisis as "Blackadder economics".

The housing divide splitting the nation into property "haves" and "have-nots" is among the biggest political issues in the run-up to the election.

But in the book Progressive Thinking: Ten Perspectives on Housing released by the Public Service Association, Tookey took aim at the solutions being proposed for the housing crisis including the belief that freeing up land in Auckland through so-called Special Housing Areas would solve the crisis on its own.

Instead, it was time for radical thinking, including dotting the landscape with mass-produced prefabricated houses.

Consumers' changing demands force energy companies to adapt

Changing household power consumption habits are forcing power companies to do things differently.

Vector and Meridian have reported on their performance in the year to the end of June.

Vector reported profit rose 186 per cent to $168.9 million. Meridian's was $197m.

Vector chairman Michael Stiassny said, while the fundamentals of Vector's Auckland energy networks were strong, the growth in Auckland's population was not expected to translate into growth in regulated earnings for the next two to three years. Vector had to continue to look to other sources to generate revenue to plug this gap.

Landlords v tenants: How to live in a house

Landlords have come in for a bashing following the publication of the People's Review of Renting by Renters United.

The report contained extracts of tenants' bad experiences with landlords and damp, unhealthy houses.

But seasoned landlords feel they are being demonised, and say tenants "who don't know how to live in a house" can turn an ordinary family home into a damp, mouldy mess in just a few months.

Auckland landlord Peter Lewis gave the example of a friend who turned landlord by renting out the home he had lived in for 19 years, and had raised his family in.

Recipe: Rhubarb fool with orange shortbread

Fools have the perfect balance of tart fruit and creamy decadence, and rhubarb makes a great fool. Just be sure to pair it with really good custard, home-made if you have time, with plenty of vanilla seeds in it. With the addition of shortbread for some welcome texture, you have heaven in a glass. Red carpet rolled out for accountants as demand booms

Accountants are spoilt for choice with the booming finance sector offering more bonuses and new jobs to workers.

Consult Recruitment managing director Angela Cameron said accounting and finance professionals have been aware their skills were in demand and with the strong economy, they were more likely to jump ship for a better deal.

"Not only are employers paying the best people more, they're offering significantly more benefits too. And employees certainly notice when their peers change jobs and the red carpet is rolled out for them," Cameron said.

In a market where candidates have more and more job offers to choose from, Cameron said employers needed to do more to attract, hire and retain top talent.

Renters v Landlords: The horror stories from Renters United report

Renters United's report on tenants' experiences paints a picture of some renters feeling trapped in an existence of instability in poor-quality rental houses.

The People's Review of Renting contains anonymised extracts from 610 renters' experiences, crowdsourced by the Action Station online platform.

Some of the stories - assuming them to be true - suggest that despite tenants being able to take complaints to the Tenancy Tribunal, some landlords are not living up to their legal duty to supply homes fit for human habitation.

Renters United claims that landlord abuses are possible because, as housing academic Philippa-Howden-Chapman said: "Tenants worry that if they complain their rents will rise or they could be evicted."

KiwiSaver investor documents are shorter but not sweeter, researchers say

New rules have shortened the documentation that KiwiSaver providers give investors – but it has not become any easier to understand.

As part of the Financial Markets Conduct Act changes, fund managers, including KiwiSaver providers, are now required to provide shorter and more templated product disclosure statements.

For many investors, these are their main source of information about the funds - covering things such as where money is invested, how risky the investment is, what fees will be charged and what taxes will apply.

The new rules were meant to cut down the amount of unnecessary data investors were given, which could make it harder for them to access the relevant information.

Why don't we work 15 hours a week?

A 15-hour work week sounds too good to be true. Especially when many Australians work excessive hours, often for no additional pay, and struggle with the cost of living.

Yet economist John Maynard Keynes suggested in 1930 that the work week would be whittled to 15 hours by 2030, according to Dutch writer and historian Rutger Bregman. A United States Senate committee report in the mid-1960s predicted the work week would be down to just 14 hours by 2000, with at least seven weeks off a year.

"I think it's just extraordinary," Bregman said. "Until the 1970s almost all the economists, sociologists, philosophers, you name it, believed we'd be working less and less and less.

"It only started to change around 1980 – around the western world we started working more."

Recipe: go dark with Jordan Rondel's pinot noir chocolate cake

The inclusion of pinot noir in this cake might seem strange, but it creates an unusual and highly decadent dessert. This recipe is inspired by perfect balance of tart and sweet of blackberries which complement the chocolate and wine in the most harmonious way. The result is an almost aromatic, cake with a moreishly fudgy texture.

Now even Aussie wines are NZ citizens

The Anzac wine relations narrative delivers new twists and subplots every year. Sometimes it's about mutual respect and admiration, sometimes it isn't. The two countries have become fierce competitors for wine market share. And we all know the depths to which trans-Tasman competition can sometimes sink.

New Zealand and Australia's greatest food fights

New Zealand and Australia fight over cricket, rugby, football, actors, and food is certainly contentious too.

History  is littered with to-ing and fro-ing over who could lay claim to our favourite foods, with home kitchens on both sides of the ditch churning similar treats out for decades.

With Saturday's Bledisloe Cup match in mind, we thought we should settle the score on who really lays claim to these precious treats.

Janine Starks: Kids don't have to be treated the same, but it should be fair

OPINION: The money signals sent by mums and dads from childhood to adulthood shape our ability to become financially independent adults.

Children learn from what they see, hear and feel. Money is no different.

Financial education can only go so far, and how we ultimately behave with money is learnt from the people closest to us. Fairness within a family doesn't always automatically extend to money.

The personality traits and talents of children and young adults can impact the ability of a parent to notice cash-favouritism. In adult children, both appreciation and manipulation can cloud a parent's ability to see an unfair outcome.

Hawke's Bay vintage which delivers great taste and greater legacy

Sometimes good things come in threes, some other times, they come in fives or sixes – I have recently been fortunate to try several magnificent, 'prestige' wines, mainly from New Zealand and one almost mythical beasty from Australia. These wines are all in the $50-plus bracket, all will cellar extremely well (including those that are already nicely aged), and all would make exceptional 'special occasion' wines.

Beyond the buffet: the rise of New Zealand's hotel food scene

Students reveal loan mistakes and lessons

If you are planning to take out a student loan for a course of study in the near future, take heed.

As part of this year's Money Week, the Commission for Financial Capability has asked current and former students what they wished they had known about student loans before they borrowed.

About 730,000 New Zealanders have a student loan and there is just over $15 billion in outstanding debt. The average loan is about $21,000.

David Boyle, group manager of investor education and retirement villages at the commission, said many people did not give a lot of thought to student loans because they were usually interest-free.

Customers upset at 'on the nose' added fees for rental cars

Phil Rumble thought he had booked a rental car for $48.50 a day for a trip with his partner to Hawke's Bay.

But when they went to pick up the vehicle, they discovered that price was just the beginning.

There was another $30 a day for airport parking fees, another 15 per cent for GST and they would have to pay $40 each day if they wanted an insurance policy with no excess.

When they opted to skip the fee and stick with the $3500 excess, Rumble was warned that if there were scratches on the car when it was returned to Hertz, he would be expected to pay.

Lots of us own them, but few New Zealanders understand bonds

Many New Zealanders have lent a lot more of their money out than they might realise.

The Financial Markets Authority (FMA) has released new data on bonds, to coincide with this year's Money Week, which has a focus on debt.

Bonds are an investment in debt. They allow people to lend money to governments and companies, in return for a promise to pay it back in full, with regular interest payments.

In New Zealand, some people buy bonds directly, often through a financial adviser.

Millennial Money: The best KiwiSaver scheme for me

Millennials are accused of being unwise with money. Four young Stuff business reporters will share the fruits of their knowledge - and we're not talking avocados.

Kiwisaver fees are real, and sometimes really big. So much so that some financial experts have deemed them the biggest household expense nobody talks about.

If you're in KiwiSaver raking in those returns, then you are also paying for those fund managers out there to take care of your money. Nothing good ever comes free, as they say.

Fees depend on what fund (that's conservative, mixed, or growth) you are in.

Simplicity managing director Sam Stubbs said the two biggest financial decisions millennials can should make when it comes to KiwiSaver is what fund you're in and what fees you pay.
