Time to ditch 'Blackadder' housing policies, academic says

Construction industry expert professor John Tookey has likened Government policies to tackle the housing crisis as "Blackadder economics".

The housing divide splitting the nation into property "haves" and "have-nots" is among the biggest political issues in the run-up to the election.

But in the book Progressive Thinking: Ten Perspectives on Housing released by the Public Service Association, Tookey took aim at the solutions being proposed for the housing crisis including the belief that freeing up land in Auckland through so-called Special Housing Areas would solve the crisis on its own.

Instead, it was time for radical thinking, including dotting the landscape with mass-produced prefabricated houses.
