Many New Zealanders have lent a lot more of their money out than they might realise.
The Financial Markets Authority (FMA) has released new data on bonds, to coincide with this year's Money Week, which has a focus on debt.
Bonds are an investment in debt. They allow people to lend money to governments and companies, in return for a promise to pay it back in full, with regular interest payments.
In New Zealand, some people buy bonds directly, often through a financial adviser.
