Straw habit needs to be broken to wean us off plastic

It costs $100 to buy 15,000 plastic straws but that money will only buy 1800 biodegradable paper straws.

This is the financial hit faced by hospitality businesses trying to join the anti-plastic straw movement which is gaining ground across the country.

But Hospitality New Zealand says the answer is to stop offering straws with every drink.

Instead, it says only drinks that need straws should get them - like milkshakes - and otherwise straws should be available only on request.
