If only Melanie Pedersen had not had to pay rent while she was living in Sydney four years ago, she might have quite a different life now.
While working as a public relations freelancer in 2013, the Bay of Plenty woman contracted to a Bitcoin exchange in Sydney. They offered her a choice: Six Bitcoin or A$200 cash a week.
Each Bitcoin is today worth $23,976. Pedersen estimates she would have the equivalent of $2.88 million now if she had opted to be paid in the cryptocurrency.
But she needed the cash to pay her rent. "I didn't even consider it. They said this or that and I said cash please. It was only the other day I did some calculations – I don't feel bad about it, it is what it is. I was only 23 and I needed the money. Someone said you would have been out on the streets but you'd have lots of Bitcoin – now I'd own the street."
