5 minute gardener: What to do this weekend

GET CHITTING POTATOES

Lay seed potatoes in a container, such as an egg tray or carton, in a dry place. When the sprouts reach at least one centimetre long, they may be planted, carefully, so as not to break or damage any sprout.

Any early potatoes you have already chitted, with sprouts at least a 1cm long, may be planted now in containers in a warm, frost-free spot such as a verandah. About three per standard bucket is a good rule of thumb. Any container used must have good drainage. Two-thirds fill it with well-rotted compost and garden soil and plant the tuber about 12-15cm deep.
