8 top plants to add tropical texture to a NZ garden

A cacophony of bold textures can create a truly Jungle Book feel and a real sense of escape in the garden. In the picture above, fast-growing palms and slower cycads are framed with the bronze frilly fronds of an exotic tree fern (Cyathea tomentosissima). This fern is perfect for smaller gardens and available from Fronds NZ. Shooting up in the centre is a bushy tropical cabbage tree (Cordyline nigra) – a lovely drought- and shade-tolerant shrub that's great in containers too.
