Motueka cafe's syringe-injected doughnuts selling like hot cakes

Smoked meat is their bread and butter, but it's the doughnuts bringing home the bacon for one Motueka eatery.

Open for just over a year in the old Hot Mama's Cafe premises on High St, owner and chef of The Smoking Barrel Josiah Smits has created a menu based around American-style slow cooked and smoked dishes.

However, it is the popularity of its hand-made doughnuts that has created the biggest buzz.

"It's taken off and become a bit of a craze and we've had people coming from all over the place, just coming over to get these doughnuts," he said.
