Wrapping vegetables in what looks like excessive packaging helps shops give the impression that their products are higher value, one marketing expert says.
A photo of Australian Woolworth's Select brand gold kumara being sold in plastic trays has received more than 6000 angry responses since it was posted on the supermarket's Facebook page on Saturday by New South Wales mental health worker Leanne Stokan.
Woolworths said on the post that the packaging was necessary to preserve the vegetable on its journey from supplier to consumer.
In New Zealand, apples, pears, bananas, citrus fruit, tomatoes, zucchini, beetroot and lettuce among other fruit and vegetables could be bought either packaged or loose in Countdown supermarkets, which are owned by the same company.
