It's time Kiwis stepped back from their relentless sipping of sauvignon blanc and pinot noir. This winter, why not try something different and discover new flavours?
A Stuff story investigating the supposed surge to drink heavier red wines over winter revealed that we don't change much at all. There's a slight shift to red, but in general we keep on drinking what we like year round.
Most people start with fruity and accessible sauvignon blanc when they start drinking wine. So, when they move to red, they often find a fruity pinot noir the easiest step.
New Zealand Wine figures show these two are easily the most popular drops. Sauvignon blanc taking up 58 per cent of wine production and pinot noir 15 per cent.
