The concept of taking a bit of meat, bashing it as thin as you can, flouring it and quickly frying it off is bandied around all over Europe. Scaloppine, saltimbocca, schnitzel; cordon bleu, chicken Kiev and so on – I love this sort of thing. I admire places that celebrate such timeless simplicity; Al Brown's veal schnitzel at The Fed in Auckland is such a thing of joy.

New parents miss out on KiwiSaver HomeStart grants
One woman's maternity leave KiwiSaver shock has revealed many people are missing out on first home grants.
When Amy Wright, from Christchurch, went on maternity leave, nobody told her she should make voluntary contributions to KiwiSaver or risk missing out on the HomeStart grants.
The grants of between $3000 and $5000 are designed to help young people buy homes, but only if they have been contributing members of KiwiSaver for at least three years.
Wright wanted to alert other new mums to the threat. (Editor's note: Wright works for stuff)

Finance Minister Grant Robertson keen to see end to Reserve Bank's brakes on housing
Finance Minister Grant Robertson says it would make sense to remove large deposit requirements on home buyers, as his government is cracking down on speculation in other ways.
The Reserve Bank will release its six-monthly update on the state of the banking system on Wednesday morning, in which it is expected to set criteria for the removal of its loan-to-value ratios (LVRs).
LVRs were introduced in 2013 to cool the rapidly rising housing market. They require most people applying for a home loan to stump up a deposit of at least 20 per cent.
The move has been criticised for making it harder for first-home-buyers to get onto the ladder.

I want to shop sustainably but ...
New Zealand shoppers want to buy products that are produced sustainably, but they aren't following through.
New research says that may be because they lack information.
University of Otago Business School researchers looked at the disparity between what consumers say they would like to do and what they actually do, studying the link between labelling information and the intention to buy organic products in New Zealand.

New research says that may be because they lack information.
University of Otago Business School researchers looked at the disparity between what consumers say they would like to do and what they actually do, studying the link between labelling information and the intention to buy organic products in New Zealand.

Budget Buster: Is the sharemarket heading for a crash?
OPINION: The New Zealand sharemarket is on a rip-snorting run. Last month the benchmark NZX 50 index crossed a record-breaking 8000 points, and has climbed even higher since. Markets overseas are enjoying the same rally. Shares have been soaring for almost nine years now, making this the second strongest bull market since World War II.

Loans and gifts come back to bite beneficiaries
A woman asked to repay $120,000 because she took out loans while on the benefit may be just the tip of an iceberg of concerns with the way the Ministry of Social Development categorises income.
In the High Court, the ministry argued that the woman, whose identity is suppressed, should repay money she was paid in benefits because she had taken out the loans to pay for home repairs, and expenses for her children.
The outcome of the case has not yet been decided. But financial adviser Liz Koh said there were many other people being caught in similar situations.
The Social Security Act defines income for benefit purposes as being "whether capital or not". That means, even in situations where people are drawing down their own money, or taking gifts of money from family, they can be affected.

Recipe: Sam Mannering's Lebanese flatbreads
As kids, whenever we had people visiting, we were entrusted with making flatbreads. It was a cunning way of keeping us out of mischief, now I think of it. The ubiquitous 90s combo of sweet chilli, cream cheese and parmesan was the obvious favourite, but as we grew older, we learned to branch out and get more creative. By the time I was at university, I used to make great big batches of flatbread dough before going out, to embellish with whatever toppings we could find when we got home. It was an excellent way of making friends.

Wishing you a lovely, ratepayer-subsidised day out with the kids

Fortunately for Auckland families, they often get quite a bit of help footing the bill ... from ratepayers.
We've all had now our rates "explainer" letters from Auckland Council, so we can see that in the year to the end of June 2018, "parks, community and lifestyle" will cost $578 million, while another $189m will be spent on "economic and cultural development".

Millennial Money: Can you celebrate Christmas without spending?
A GoPro, Polaroid camera, and an expired horse riding voucher are just some of the Christmas presents that ended up in a corner of my bedroom collecting dust.
Christmas presents in my family are a big deal. So big that two months ago, when my mum visited from Australia, she brought over a sack full of presents for me to open on the day.
Alarge part of Christmas is about outdoing one another. I remember my mum being outraged years ago when my aunt bought people more gifts than she had.
She was embarrassed she hadn't spent more on everyone - and we're already talking a good hundred dollars on every family member.

A cancer survivor's desire to leave something for her son to remember her by helped inspire a fledgling business.

Spring asparagus with a yoghurt & chive dressing and a crunchy salad on the side
Some years ago I established an asparagus bed in the back yard. Growing asparagus is a serious commitment. Once the asparagus "crowns" are planted it takes two to three years for the root system to establish before a single spear can be harvested.

Half of ACC disputes are over elective surgery
Refusal to pay for elective surgery topped the list of the 10 most common disputes over Accident Compensation Corporation decisions last year.
About 5600 formal reviews were taken by claimants against the state insurer in the year to June 2017.
ACC figures show 2330 of those complaints were over elective surgeries to treat injuries.
To reach a formal review, clients must appeal to ACC within three months of it making a decision to decline to cover the cost of a surgery.

Paper millionaires told: Don't get carried away
Homeowners are being warned not to start living like millionaires just because their properties are now worth seven figures.
Councils in many parts of country are going through revaluation processes which give owners an updated value for their properties. This is done once every three years.
These council valuations are used to set rates. More expensive properties pick up a larger proportion of the overall rate bill.
In Auckland, the latest rateable value update has lifted the average over $1 million for the first time.

Call for Australian-style 'opt out' class action lawsuits
New Zealand should introduce Australian-style "opt out" class action lawsuits, says leading class action lawyer Adina Thorn.
Class action civil lawsuits, in which groups of claimants club together to sue companies or government departments for compensation, can be taken in New Zealand.
But they can only be taken in the names of claimants who actively "opt in" to them, contrasting with Australia where class actions can be "opt out" affairs where all potential claimants in a case are included, unless they choose to actively opt out.
Thorn's call comes amid rising calls for the booming class action industry, and the controversial litigation lending that bankrolls it, should be regulated by acts of Parliament.

Research reveals New Zealand women's confidence gap
Too many New Zealand women still lack confidence when it comes to dealing with their finances, AMP Financial Services says.
The KiwiSaver provider's general manager of advice and sales, Therese Singleton, was prompted to research New Zealand women's attitudes to the financial services sector when she saw worrying data from the United States.
It showed women there rated financial services as the industry least sympathetic and understanding of them. They cited a lack of respect, poor advice, contradictory policies, one-size-fits-all forms and too much red tape.
Singleton surveyed 700 New Zealand women and found most were happy with the quality of service they got from financial institutions in this country.

Lots to like about checkout operator's money plan
OPINION: I met one checkout operator with his eyes on higher things.
There's been a flurry of chatter around the aspirations of checkout operators.
It started when Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern demanded to know when Bill English had lost his ambition for New Zealanders, gushing that a checkout operator could go on to study at university and be prime minister.

There's been a flurry of chatter around the aspirations of checkout operators.
It started when Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern demanded to know when Bill English had lost his ambition for New Zealanders, gushing that a checkout operator could go on to study at university and be prime minister.

The most common reason people close their KiwiSaver
The KiwiSaver objective to "encourage a long-term savings habit" appears to be working.
The vast majority of people closing their KiwiSaver accounts are doing so because they have retired, figures from the Inland Revenue Department show.
Of the over 170,000 who closed their KiwiSaver account as of June this year, about 110,000 did so because they had reached retirement.
Other reasons included permanent emigration and death, which accounted for just under 20,000 closed accounts each.

Ask yourself, am I being scammed?
A Christchurch man lost $67,000 because he failed to pick up the warning signs that he was "investing" his money with crooks.
The Financial Markets Authority is using "Bob's" losses to highlight the threat to Kiwi households' wealth from overseas-based investment scams.
Bob was cold-called with an "investment offer", but should have put the phone down immediately, said the FMA's Paul Gregory.
"The best thing investors can do to someone cold-calling offering an investment from offshore is to put down the phone. Ignore that e-mail. If you hand over money and it turns out to be a scam, it's often impossible to get your money back," he said.

What's behind big mark-ups? What we're prepared to pay
A KÄpiti Coast cafe owner says her cheese scones deserve every cent of their $5.50 price, but those of us handing over our cash can't tell if we're paying what something is worth.

A day in the life of The Drunken Nanny goats' cheesemakers
Amanda Goodman and her husband Lindsey began raising goats on their sheep and beef farm in Martinborough about seven years ago. As their herd grew, they family couldn't bear to part with the animals, so Amanda learnt to make goats' cheese. Today, the couple and their three children, Emily, 11, Sam, 9, and Phoebe, 7, have about 180 goats, plus kids, on their 300ha property.

These comforting, crispy oat biscuits are brought to life with the combination of almond butter and slightly bitter marmalade. You could use any flavour or jam that you prefer though. I also adore these biscuits with cheese and fruit paste!

Investor: My fault for buying an overly expensive property
Twenty-eight-year-old Auckland property investor Tim owns one property that is negatively geared.
Each month, what he gets in rent does not cover the cost of the mortgage interest and repairs, rates and maintenance on the property.
At present, the sting of some of that pain is removed each year when he is able to claim a $2000 or $3000 tax refund.
The rental property's loss reduces his total taxable income, and means the amount he has paid in tax on his salary works out to be too much, so he gets a refund.

Retiring with a mortgage? Time to make some tough decisions
OPINION: Retirement isn't what it once was.
Plenty of Kiwis are working beyond age 65 when they qualify for NZ Super payments.
It's no wonder. Work is good. People are staying healthier for longer. Mortgages are immense.
In many cases I suspect people working into their late 60s and 70s couldn't afford to stop work even if they wanted to.

The $1000 cookbook that will change the way you think about bread
When American scientist, inventor, entrepreneur and cook Nathan Myhrvold discovered Roman law demanded every loaf of bread from Pompeii's 33 bakeries had to be stamped with a bronze iron, he thought, "that's so cool". So he tracked one down through an antiquities dealer, bought it, "and for the first time in 2000 years it went into an oven", he says.
