Should we eat our way out of the jellyfish problem?

With jellyfish getting ready to invade our beaches again this summer, even scientists think it would be a good idea to start eating the floating stingers.

Niwa emeritus researcher Dennis Gordon says he's all for turning them into food to help cut back numbers.

"Jellyfish are mostly water anyway, but the bowl, the jelly part, has quite a bit of protein in it. If it holds together well enough, you could probably eat the local ones, but i don't know if there is a market out there."

He's eaten jellyfish in Taiwan and says "it's not bad". "It was flavoured and stringy like noodles."

NZ call for banks to cut ATM fees after Aussie banks drop theirs

Manawatu man Lewin Dickson wants to know when his bank is going to follow Australia's lead and cut the fee it charges for customers using other banks' ATMs.

The Commonwealth Bank of Australia was the first to change, making an announcement on Sunday that it would axe the A$2 ($2.20) fee that applied to any user who was not using a CommBank key card.

Westpac, ANZ and National Australian Bank followed suit later in the day.

All four banks cited the unpopularity of the fee with consumers, who were forking out A$500 million a year for withdrawing their own cash.

New Zealand politicians share their post-election celebration meals

Seven weeks of non-stop campaigning, New Zealand's political leaders won't have had time to sit down and enjoy a proper meal.

How will they celebrate if they get what they want? Could it be a bucket of fried chicken, a bacon sandwich or a degustation at a fancy restaurant with a bottle of New Zealand's finest wine? We ask some of our political leaders, and most of them play ball.

Kevin Lampen-Smith: What are we doing wrong in multi-offer situations?

After unsuccessfully trying to buy a section for two years, we are getting fed up. We've lost out numerous times in multi-offer processes, which seem really unfair. Sometimes we have suspected that the agent hasn't even bothered to present our offer to the buyer, even though we've offered over the asking price and done everything right. Can you explain how this works please, and help us understand what we're doing wrong?

Lower-tier lenders eye KiwiSaver for repayments, budget agencies claim

Lenders to the poorest segments of society are eyeing borrowers' KiwiSaver as a way of getting their loans repaid, the Commerce Commission has been told.

The commission is tasked with policing the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act, which lenders must follow. It is designed to make sure they lend responsibly only to people who can afford repayments.

Complaints to the commission that lenders had broken the law rose to 242 in the 12 months to the end of June, from 164 the previous year, the commission said in its Consumer Issues report, released today.

And among the accusations levelled at finance companies is that some believed they could raid borrowers' KiwiSaver super savings, if people fell on hard times and could not repay their loans.

Vodafone tops New Zealand's most complained about traders

Just 21 traders were the subject of 20 per cent of all complaints to the Commerce Commission in the 12 months to the end of June, and giant telecommunications company Vodafone topped the list.

Kiwis fall foul of dodgy online traders, Commerce Commission warns

Shopping online is proving hazardous to some consumers' wealth, the Commerce Commission's Consumer Issues report has revealed.

With New Zealanders having spent $350 million online in May alone, and online shopping growing at a "double digit" rate, some are falling victim to shopping shopping scams and tricks.

Often those unscrupulous traders are based overseas, making the chance of a shopper getting their money back low.

The commission found around 20 per cent of ".co.nz" websites were run by overseas traders, which is lulling some shoppers into a false sense of security believing they are dealing with a New Zealand-based company.

Ardern v English: Leaders' house price claims face credibility claims

When challenged by Patrick Gower during the second leaders' debate on whether they wanted house prices to fall, prime minister Bill English said: "I want them to stay flat while incomes rise."

His rival for power Jacinda Arden said: "For homeowners, the ones who currently have their homes.

We don't want them to lose their value, but we want more affordable housing in the market as well, and that is what is missing."

Experts doubt that either party's policies will achieve their leader's hopes.

Budget Buster: Simple living is the new status symbol

OPINION: Until surprisingly recently, being fat was a status symbol. Most people were constantly staving off starvation, so love handles were a sign of wealth. Don't rely on KiwiSaver fund names, investors told

If you're trying to pick the right KiwiSaver fund, you need to do more than just look at what the fund is called, industry commentators say.

KiwiSaver members are often told that they must make sure that they are in the right type of fund for their circumstances. Usually, growth assets such as shares perform better over the long term. But they can be volatile.

That means that people with a long time until they retire are usually encouraged to put their money in "growth" or at least "balanced" KiwiSaver funds. Those who might want access to their money in the near future are usually encouraged to stick to conservative funds, where there is less chance of a downturn just as the money is needed.

But researchers say you can't always rely on what a fund is called to describe its risk profile.
