Restaurant Review: Wellington's Sterling Woodfire Eatery & Bar
If hotel restaurants often seem tiresome add-ons, it may be because the Basil Fawlty school of hoteliers feels irked at slothful, tardy house guests who demand a dining room for breakfast, lunch and dinner, seven days a week, yet in reality don't patronise the place much past breakfast. Traditionally hotel restaurants have played it safe, offering well-heeled guests technically accomplished twists on comfort food. But today's hoteliers have developed an antidote to the blandness, whereby the entire hotel restaurant operation is farmed out to well-known names in the industry.

How do they choose those Pantone colours? It's a long story....
Pantone's colour of the year - announced in December every year - is a big deal in fashion and design circles. Just look at the 2016 colours of the year; "rose quartz" and "serenity" (light pastel pink and a baby blue) both of which have become dominant in interiors, on the runway and throughout social media this year.
But how are these colours chosen? As it turns out; two years in advance and through careful analysis of pop culture trends.
Vice President of Pantone Colour Institute, Laurie Pressman, told The Cut, "colour trend forecasting is being able to look at what's happening now, what we see if going to be happening in the future and being able to glom onto those key trends or leading trend indicators to see what the future looks like and what that means for colour."
"Everything impacts colour."

Hamilton's Vera Farrant has raised thousands for Habitat for Humanity
Few plants in Vera Farrant's jam-packed garden escape being divided and potted up to be sold at Habitat for Humanity's Hamilton ReStore shop - and thanks to her efforts, she's now a finalist in the 2016 GARDENA Gardener of the Year competition.
Nic Greene, who works for the housing charity, estimates that Farrant's plants have raised over $100,000 for the organisation since 2000. If you consider that most of the plants sell for just a couple of dollars, that's a lot of plants!

Garden of the week: A Marlborough garden that delivers the good life
If Richard and Wendy Batchelor ever write the story of their former lives as farmers at Mt Somers in Canterbury, they could call it Hard Work in a Cold Climate. As for their current circumstances, The Good Life would be apt. From farming sheep and cattle in snow at 400 metres, the Batchelors are enjoying retirement on a Marlborough vineyard property with a garden devoted to fruit and vegetables, and a boat parked in the driveway for fishing in the Sounds.

Employers can use KiwiSaver as tool to attract and retain staff
There are few businesses in New Zealand who do not have something to do with KiwiSaver. With more than 2.5 million people in the scheme after almost 10 years in operation, managing contributions has become as much a part of life as dealing with PAYE and GST.
But do you know the full extent of your obligations as an employer, and the potential benefits available to you?
Mike Woodbury, a partner at Chapman Tripp, said any firm that was based in New Zealand or carried on business from a fixed address here was caught by the KiwiSaver Act and would need to be fully aware of what that meant.

Five easy perennial herbs to plant right now
Herbs are great value for growing at home - a small bunch of fresh cut herbs at the supermarket costs as much as a plant from a garden centre.
Spring's the best time to establish a herb patch because annual herbs grow quickly from seed, and perennial herbs happily take root from cuttings or divisions from older plants. If you haven't got space in the garden, you can have a great herb garden in pots.
All herbs do best in full sun, although they have quite difference moisture needs. Basil and mint prefer moist soil, whereas rosemary and sage hate wet feet. As a general rule, free-draining soil is a must for all Mediterranean herbs.

Just like a beautiful bluebell dell... for Kiwis
Blue is the quintessential shade for a spring carpet and there are a clutch of good bulbs suitable for naturalising.
Neither quite blue nor purple, punctuated with ferns and shimmering in spring sunshine, an English bluebell wood is one of those botanical icons that many gardeners are eager to try.
Here in New Zealand, we may ramp up the drama using silver-stemmed birch trees and roll out swathes of the bigger, coarser Spanish bluebells (Hyacinthoides hispanica), which grow better in our climate, but we never quite achieve the simplicity or scale of the original English bluebell wood.

House of the week: A 1960s apple pickers' cottage transformed
At the end of Hoddy Road, near Mapua, the peninsula presses out into Waimea Inlet so that it feels like you could be on an island, water in front and to either side. The little 1960s apple pickers' cottage stands as close as regulation will allow to the shoreline, a black wooden box with a pale green roof, sheltered by half a dozen mature pines. This scene, too, could be a kind of island, a piece of Tasman's orcharding past that survived even as the area surrounding it became highly desirable real estate, dotted with architecturally designed dwellings.
