Blue is the quintessential shade for a spring carpet and there are a clutch of good bulbs suitable for naturalising.
Neither quite blue nor purple, punctuated with ferns and shimmering in spring sunshine, an English bluebell wood is one of those botanical icons that many gardeners are eager to try.
Here in New Zealand, we may ramp up the drama using silver-stemmed birch trees and roll out swathes of the bigger, coarser Spanish bluebells (Hyacinthoides hispanica), which grow better in our climate, but we never quite achieve the simplicity or scale of the original English bluebell wood.
