KiwiSaver fees clock shows how big a bite fund managers take out of returns

Low-cost passive KiwiSaver scheme provider Simplicity has launched an online KiwiSaver "fees clock".

The fees clock was inspired by the New York US Debt Clock, and was designed to highlight just how big a bite out of KiwiSaver returns fund manager fees were taking, said Simplicity founder Sam Stubbs.

The clock is spinning round at $1000 a minute, showing the combined fee-generating power of KiwiSaver schemes.

"When members finally understand what they're actually paying in fees this year, they could be shocked," Stubbs said.

Stroke ends cruise dream, but insurance recoups $53,000 cost

Looking out through the window, from a bed in Auckland Hospital, Peter McConnell watched his ship sail away.

Peter, 76, and his wife Donna had been preparing to head away on a "trip of a lifetime" Pacific cruise taking in Fiji, Easter Island, The Falkland Islands and South America, when he suffered a serious stroke.

He faced a long recovery, and there would be no joining the ship in a foreign port.

The trip hadn't been cheap, but the couple got $53,000 because the pair had bought travel insurance from Southern Cross Travel Insurance (SCTI) at the time they booked their tickets.

Julian Wilson, programme manager of ASB's Get Wise, a youth financial literacy programme delivered in schools, said parents should help their kids set savings goals that were age-appropriate and achievable.

"Help your child research prices for simple items or activities to show there's a variance in cost - a bus trip or a visit to the movies versus something free like a trip to the park."

8 tactics jobseekers use in successful CVs and cover letters

Of the hundreds of resumés I reviewed last year, some stood out for the oddest reasons.

There was one that used Comic Sans as the font throughout, thereby reflecting the work of a primary schooler. There was another that didn't include the applicant's contact details at all – a mysterious phantom candidate. And then there was my personal favourite, if only for daring purposes, who creatively presented her CV on PowerPoint rather than Word. (She got the job.)

What makes those examples so confronting is that the resumé and cover letter are supposed to be the first attempt at a first impression.

And yet if you were to look beyond those standouts, you'd see for yourself how many more are even littered with typos and spelling mistakes, cliches and gaps, hyperboles and lies.

When music lessons just aren't worth the money

OPINION: Both of my daughters are agreed on the joy that comes from singing popular hits loudly (and tunefully), but there's a sharp divide when it comes to wanting to learn instruments.

Daughter one has zero interest. Daughter two is keen, and has proven herself by practising recorder for school without having to be nagged. Her flute lessons begin shortly. Daughter one's lessons have come to an end.

Parents are often keen to have their children learn instruments, some owing to a belief in "Little Mozart" syndrome that learning an instrument makes children smarter, others because they believe it brings their child status.

But depending on how your child learns it can cost anywhere from nothing (taught at home by a skilled parent continuing a family tradition) to $15-30 for group, or single lessons.

Back-to-school costs put pressure on New Zealand families

Gina Wood is expecting a big bill when her three kids, aged 8, 10 and 13, return to school this year.

So far, she's spent $75 on stationery for two children and will spend another $48 on the third. Then there's the school contribution of $300. School camp will be another $300.

Extracurricular activities will add to the total, with about $200 for sports, or more if Chase, 13, opts to pay soccer for a club. Guitar and piano lessons at school at $120.

Only Chase has a uniform but will need three pairs of school socks, at $40, and a jacket, $85.

New Zealand seafood festivals to bookmark in 2018

As an island nation, it's easy to take for granted the abundance and accessibility of food lurking on and beyond our coastline. And yet kaimoana - slimey, briny, chewy, flaky - has sustained human life in New Zealand for as long as we have tread here. Taking on the fast food giants in South Auckland

In South Auckland, a small business owned by two friends is creating a stir. Owner Manas Nanda tells why he thinks serving mouth-watering dishes inspired by mums around the world is the best recipe for success.

I am a foodie. Food has always been a huge part of my life. I used to love seeing my mum and grandma in the kitchen, cooking amazing delicacies.

It was a humble Indian childhood, but it was one nourished by delicate spices and mind-blowing flavours.

In India, a good chunk of the population lives below the poverty line. Even as a child, I knew there was a significant economic difference between the rich and the poor in my small town. Many kids miss out on basic needs like food, shelter and clean water.

Butter prices drop but avocados still twice last year's price

Relief for butter-lovers - after a year in which prices soared, December brought a Christmas present of an almost 5 per cent price drop.

Statistics NZ has released its latest food price data, which shows chocolate bars and wholemeal bread also fell in price. Tomatoes and nectarines were cheaper in december, but avocados were still about twice the price of a year ago.

After four successive monthly rises, butter prices dropped 4.9 per cent in December 2017 to an average of $5.46 for the cheapest available 500g block. This compared with the previous month when they hit a record high of $5.74. Butter prices had been falling at international dairy auctions since October.

It is still well up on the October 2016 average price of $3.50 for 500g.

How to tackle stress at work

Workplaces can be a prime cause of stress, but there are ways people can improve the situation - or at least become better at dealing with it, says a London doctor.

If you're feeling well, stress is also less of a problem, London GP Ellie Cannon, the author of Is Your Job Making You Ill?, told Radio New Zealand on Wednesday.

"If life is going well, it doesn't really matter if you run out the door in the morning trying to catch a train while slurping a coffee from a takeaway cup and you miss the train and you have to go to work late…

"But if you're feeling stressed from your job and you arrive at work having had not a good breakfast and too much coffee and having to run down the road, you're arriving at a stressful job already stressed out."

Here's what's missing from cookbooks

OPINION: Cookbooks and I have always had a fractious relationship. I am drawn in by their delicious photographs and encouraging prose, then recoil in the grip of an almighty tantrum when a "15 minute" recipe takes me three hours and a phone call to my therapist. For one significant stretch of my life, during masters study, I even gave up on cooking altogether and watched the polystyrene eskies pile up.

Does your boss 'phub' you to focus on their phone?

It has probably happened to you: You are in a meeting, but your boss is totally distracted by his or her phone - drawn away by the latest ping of an email or text message, or scrolling a news feed.

The phenomenon is called boss "phubbing", which is when a supervisor snubs an employee in favour of his mobile phone when they are meeting.

And researchers James Roberts and Meredith David, professors of marketing at Baylor University in the United States, have found that this behaviour undermines trust and engagement in the workplace.

Ethical dilemma for lawyers forced by new rules to disclose dodgy dealings

Lawyers and real estate agents will be obliged to alert the authorities to dodgy transactions under the next phase of tough anti-money laundering rules coming in this year.

But lawyers say they will not be forced to breach client confidentiality, an important legal principle.

The Anti-Money Laundering and Countering Financing of Terrorism Act (AML-CFT) came into force initially with banks and financial institutions four years ago, amid an international effort to crack down on tax avoidance.
