Grapefruit are a fruit that many Kiwis love to hate. Whether the juice and pulp is just too mouth-puckeringly tart, or they interfere with your medication, they've fallen from favour in recent years.
But many backyards in frost-free parts of the country still have a large tree that needs little, if any, care or attention yet reaps a huge crop, year after year, from June until well into spring.
