OPINION: When Tim Martin, an Auckland ecologist, took it upon himself to test whether growing your own vegetables is actually worth it, he was pleasantly surprised.
After a year or so of growing vegetables and fruit in his 40sqm Mt Wellington garden, he weighed all the produce, compared it to the price of store-bought food and worked out that he had made $1300 profit after all input costs such as seeds, fertiliser and compost. Crucially, though, he didn't include the cost of his labour.
