Hedges and edges: why they are so important

The catchphrase "hedges and edges" is absolutely true: if your garden has neatly trimmed hedges and edges, it will look tidy, even if the plants and weeding need attention. Hedges, however, have a much bigger role to play in the overall scheme of things: they can provide structure, shelter, permanence, pattern, privacy, noise buffing, flowers, and more.
