How to manage on one income when your spouse wants to quit work

When Michael Palfrey decided to give up full-time work at an insurance company to go and study a Bachelor of Social Work at Massey University, it meant some serious money discussions with his wife, Ana.

"We talked about budgeting, whether we could still afford the mortgage, what we could do to reduce expenses."

Their budget had to be trimmed significantly to enable them to live off Ana's work as a media account manager, and Palfrey's part-time job. "Like Mike not buying three $4 coffees a day."

But six weeks in, it has worked out better than expected. It will still be another two years before Palfrey starts earning again, but he says he is already feeling much happier.
