New Zealand holds onto 9th place for gender parity, gap widens globally

Globally the gender gap is widening, but in New Zealand it's closing, albeit slowly, according to the World Economic Forum.

New Zealand placed ninth out of 144 countries in the Global Gender Gap Index 2017, published on Thursday.

First introduced by the World Economic Forum in 2006, the report tracks gender parity in economic participation and opportunity, educational attainment, health and survival, and political empowerment, and provides each country with a ranking for international comparisons.

However, for the first time since the index began, globally the gap has widened â€” a contrast to the slow and steady progress that has otherwise been made over the past decade.
