Precision planning or "she'll be right": What's your DIY style?

OPINION: Everyone has their own way of renovating and refurbishing their home. Some start with a plan complete with all the critical elements starting with the letter S, like spreadsheet, set square and spirit level. These are the people who wouldn't dream of ordering so much as a test pot of paint without sign-off from a quantity surveyor, let alone start a renovation until all the required tools and resources had reported for duty.

Other are more organic in their approach. When asked to measure something they grab whatever is closest and use that.

"So that's 16.5 Penguin paperbacks long by six Penguin paperbacks wide," I once informed the man who needed to know the length of the proposed dining table, "and the top needs to be one hardback Concise Oxford Dictionary thick."
