If the Whanganui River could talk, it'd have a tale or two to tell. The nation's second-longest stretch of water had been a highway and food source for generations of Maori before European settlers arrived, and more recently the prospect of a canoe journey or cycle trip along its bush-clad bends have attracted scores of visitors.
