Buying alcohol in NZ: What are your rights when shopping with others?

John Saker: Is food for the mind, food for the vine?

Now we're heading into vintage (it started a couple of weeks ago in Northland), I asked a few winemakers what they'd been reading and listening to recently. Why? Because I have a theory, which roughly goes like this: what they feed their minds, they feed their vines and wines.

Should you put solar panels on the roof? It's complicated

The column of 12 three-digit numbers adds up to $2980. They rise from $173 to $376 then down to $190. That's my family's monthly electricity bills for the past year.

We also run a pellet fire for heating in winter and a gas hob for cooking, but $57 a week is still a reasonable weekly cost. Like many, we've wondered what difference solar panels on the roof could make.

There are plenty of companies wanting to sell you a package and promising savings, but what really is the truth?

I turned to a Christchurch expert on solar power, Enasolar general manager, Trevor Foster and pushed my scrap of paper and figures across the table.

IdealCup coffee couple want to make Motueka a disposable cup-free zone

Steph Fry is starting a revolution against "revolting" disposable coffee cups.

The Motueka businesswoman is determined to make the town, west of Nelson, the first in New Zealand to be dump disposable cups and replace them with reusable and 100 per cent recyclable containers.

Steph and her husband James Fry started a coffee roastery, Celcius Coffee, in Wellington 14 years ago. From the get-go, Fry said sustainability was part of their ethos.

"Being in this industry we felt that we had an obligation to try and minimise waste as much as possible. One of the biggest, most revolting elements of the coffee industry is the disposable takeaway cups."

Real estate clients 'don't like flashiness', despite Ricky Cave comments

Real estate salespeople have to tread a fine line to make sure they do not come off as too flashy – but it should not be a struggle to earn six figures, one agency boss says.

Auckland agent Ricky Cave has made headlines for his argument that he would suffer "extreme hardship" if he could not drive his Aston Martin for six weeks.

He argued that it was part of his brand. He also earns $300,000 a year after tax and owns five properties.

Cave told the court that being without his Aston Martin was "a really bad look" in the eyes of high-end clients; it impacted his ability to work, and in turn earn the commissions that made up his income, he said.

Sudden leap in NZ credit scores, but we're no better with money

There's been a national improvement in New Zealanders' average credit score, but it is not because we have suddenly got better with money.

It i's because two of the four big banks have started feeding "positive" information to the big credit ratings agencies.

The banks are Westpac and ASB, and the impact on some people's credit scores, which go from zero to a maximum of 1000, has been dramatic.

One Westpac customer saw his credit score with credit rating agency Dun & Bradstreet, which lenders use to judge people's credit-worthiness, rise from a respectable 730 to over 900.

Bless this mess: why we cling to our clutter

5 common mistakes to avoid when washing your sheets

You might think that your bed is the thing in your bedroom getting the most use, but, if you think about it, your sheets suffer more wear and tear than the bed itself. So it pays to take good care of your bed linens – and the best way to do that is by avoiding some of these simple, common mistakes when you're in the laundry.

Wellington animal welfare activist leaves millions to SPCA

Margaret Doucas was an animal-mad five-year-old kid when she first walked through the doors of the Wellington SPCA to offer her services.

By the time she started school, the only daughter of a Greek immigrant family couldn't speak a word of English and found good company in the animals at the Newtown centre, for whom she developed an affinity and empathy that would last her lifetime.

More than 60 years later, following her sudden death last year, Doucas has injected millions of dollars from her estate into the charity, making it debt free.

Leeks used to be a big source of frustration for me. Want to save thousands? Give up shop-bought toiletries

Ditching all cosmetics and beauty products has saved one New Zealand woman thousands of dollars – and she says if other people realised how easy it was to make your own, they would probably do the same.

Lucy AitkenRead gave up shampoo five years ago as part of a quest to save money when she and her husband first had children. She wrote a book about the experience, which became popular around the world.

John Saker: A new era of Kiwi pinot noir

A few weeks ago, a year after I first encountered the Landsdowne Claret 1903, we crossed paths again. Ed Beetham generously delved into his family's historic wine cache for a group of mainly overseas wine media. Like the bottle opened a year ago, this one did not disappoint. These pre-Great War Kiwi reds are holding on stubbornly, giving us all a faded but fascinating taste of the work of the Wairarapa's first winemakers, William Beetham and his French wife Hermance.
