Garden of the week: Taranaki

Despite living just a hop, skip and a jump away from the snowy slopes of Mt Taranaki, Peter and Neryda Sullivan's Hawera garden isn't much bothered by the cold. "It never seems to be winter for very long," says Neryda. Sure enough, almost as soon as the leaves have dropped from the Sullivans' biggest trees – planted when they first began developing their quarter-hectare garden two decades ago – the rhododendrons burst into life, heavy with blush-coloured blooms, followed in quick succession by the magnolias and then innumerable roses.
