Are roses too much work for today's gardeners?

Roses have a reputation for being hard work. They require never-ending spraying, they're martyrs to pests and diseases, and all that pruning is so complicated! All that fuss and bother for a few perfect blooms while for the rest of the year there are only bare, prickly sticks in a bed of bare earth.
