Native New Zealand spiders are at risk due to a case of mistaken identity

It is not uncommon for a member of the public (and yes even some family members) to alert me to the existence of dangerous redback spiders in the garden. They usually describe a dark brown, almost black, spider with a very narrow reddish or orange stripe on the abdomen.
