They call it "the bach", tongue firmly in cheek, but Carol Thompson and Lewis Roach's Patea retreat is no average holiday home. Built in the 1880s, Beaconsfield is a two-storey, 10-roomed Italianate behemoth, set on 5ha above the town, with views of the ocean and Mt Taranaki. That's a lot of bach for two people รข€“ but just about right for a couple of passionate collectors with a bent for restoring old places.
