Private super schemes are MPs' bridges to wealth

It's not only the three homes that Simon Bridges owns, or the base pay of just shy of $300,000, that mean his personal finances are a little different from that of ordinary Kiwis.

Bach culture helps Kiwis adopt Airbnb mindset

Overseas trips have become a lot more economic for Wellington woman Thalia Kehoe Rowden and her family since they started letting their house on Airbnb.

The three-bedroom house in Hataitai can accommodate up to seven paying guests, and rents for about $238 a night.

Kehoe Rowden said, over the three years that she and her husband had owned it, they had let it for three months of each year - and a full year while they were volunteering in Thailand.

"It's a great way to make use of the house when you're away. Our house would be sitting there empty, it just seemed to totally make sense," Kehoe Rowden said.

Milo's on-off love affair with health ratings

OPINION: Nestlé has always understood the value of a good story.

And no story is as powerful as linking your product with healthy, happy kids.

That's been the big push for Milo for generations - think of Milo and images of crunchy brown powder, milk, chocolate moustaches and kids playing sport rise effortlessly up.

This just as effortlessly translates to sales because in the mad rush to do the right thing by their kids, parents have seized on Milo as a drink that will be loved and is also good for them.

Restaurant review: retro perfection at Henry Pollen's

A little over a century ago Dr Henry Pollen set up as a general practitioner in what is still the cutest French Second Empire-style building in Wellington. Much later, its curvy Mansard roof, turret, frills and flounces proved eerily appropriate to the House of Ladies, yet since then they've more worthily enhanced two Gallic restaurants – Bouquet Garni and The General Practitioner.

Homeowners told CBL Insurance 'not in a position' to pay claims

The interim liquidator of CBL Insurance has warned policyholders that it's not in a position to pay any claims.

The insurer was put into interim liquidation on Friday, creating uncertainty for the owners of thousands of recently built homes covered for shoddy building work under 10-year guarantees backed by CBL Insurance.

These include many issued on homes built by the New Zealand Certified Builders trade association.

Interim liquidator Kare Johnstone from McGrathNicol warned: "CBL Insurance is not currently in a position to make any claim payments to any beneficiaries with a claim made under their insurance policy or bond. Insureds and beneficiaries should take appropriate measures to minimise their losses."

Recipes: Sam Mannering's stuffed salmon and potato salad

I'm thinking lazy Sunday long lunch with this one. Seriously bucolic. Remarkably simple too. There are a number of ways to approach what is really a very easy recipe. Either keep the salmon whole and fill the cavity with the stuffing mixture, which in preparation terms is a little easier; or to do it as I suggest below, which means you don't have to worry about bones. Get the fishmonger to fillet and bone the fish for you – it will make things infinitely easier – or just buy two single fillets of salmon: they're often available whole. Make sure you use good bread – sourdough for the slight tang will combat the richness of the salmon in this case.

Many New Zealanders 'just getting by', economists say

Falling numbers of New Zealanders are declaring bankruptcy, but there is a warning those statistics do not reflect the number of people who are living from one pay cheque to the next.

New Zealand bankruptcies are now at a five-year low of 3215 for 2017, down more than 15 per cent on 2016.

On a per capita basis, New Zealand's bankruptcy rate is about half of Australia's. Last year, Auckland had twice the bankruptcies of anywhere else in the country.

Hazel Phillips, spokeswoman for credit score reporting website CreditSimple, said it was a sign of a good economy over recent years, which had boosted employment.

People before pets: Coping with the high cost of animal medical bills

How much of the week do you spend working for your pets?

It's a fair question.

The last comprehensive report on the topic from the Animal Companion council found the average household with dogs spent $1200 a year on them. The average cat household spent $1005.

That report was from 2016, and costs may have changed a little since then, but then the answer was that a worker on the median wage then spent about the first hour of their week working for the cat, and a bit longer for the dog.

More overseas-based borrowers repay student loans

Family pressure is prompting more New Zealanders living overseas to repay their student loans.

Government data shows 50,600 overseas-based borrowers made a repayment against their student loans in the 2016/2017 financial year, about 3000 more than the previous year.

Save the planet and stretch your budget

Small changes to the way you shop and run your household could save your money – and help the environment, too.

Here are eight ways that lightening your impact on the planet can be good for your wallet.

Shopping:  New Zealanders send 122,547 tonnes of food to landfill each year, or 79kg of edible food per household. Supermarkets often get the blame but households are responsible for the largest proportion of food waste. It's estimated to cost an average household $563 a year. If you plan your meals more closely, take a shopping list with you to the supermarket and only buy what you need, you'll save money and waste less food.

Waste less water: If you live in a part of the country that meters water separately, using less will reduce your bill. Cut down your water usage by having shorter showers, installing a low-flow showerhead, not using the hose to water your garden, and only turning on the dishwasher or washing machine when you have a full load.

Time for coffee shops to show tea drinkers some respect - reviewer

New Zealand once led the world in tea drunk per person, so it seems strange tea needs defending in public.

But as tea lover Adelia Hallett puts it, "it's time to strike back at the coffee culture".

She's created a review blog Tea on the Road which rates cafes and tearooms on the cup of tea they serve up. She gives 10 points each for the tea, the cup and the setting.

Recipe: Jordan Rondel's chocolate, plum and macadamia cake

My boyfriend's parents have an incredibly plentiful heirloom plum tree in their Auckland garden, which I always raid at this time of year. They are beautifully tart, red fleshed plums which pair perfectly with dark chocolate and rich macadamias in this simple but impressive cake.

McDonald's 'healthy' Happy Meals is a plaster on the real issue

OPINION: McDonald's is making moves to lighten the calorific load of its beloved Happy Meals, saying that by the end of 2022, half of Happy Meals listed on menus won't contain more than 600 calories, with limits on the ratios of saturated fat, sodium and sugar.

Recipe: Sam Mannering's barbecued pork chops with peaches

Whoever was it that said the apple is king? Why is something the apple of your eye? Not that I have anything against apples – indeed, I love the things – but if I had to truly set one fruit apart from the rest, it would be the peach. Glorious things, peaches. Seductive almost. Pity "the peach of your eye" doesn't quite trip off the tongue as mellifluously.

Put FIRE in your belly - live frugally, retire early

OPINION: The FIRE way of life has been getting a lot more notice lately in mainstream media.

FIRE stands for "financially Independent, retire early".

It's a life philosophy of smart, entrepreneurial, independently-minded folk, often younger folk, who decide to live extremely frugally in order to save the bulk of their income to invest.

Their aim is to achieve financial freedom as early as they can by amassing sufficient wealth to provide them with a sustainable, and liveable passive income for the rest of their lives.

Moving your credit card balance good for beating debt ... in most cases

It's about now that many people come to terms with the fact their Christmas credit card debt isn't going to pay itself off.

A balance transfer offer can be a way to deal with this problem.

The main banks all offer a low interest rate to people who transfer their credit card balances to one of their cards.

BNZ and Westpac offer 0 per cent interest for one year on transferred balances. ASB has 0 per cent for six months.

Analysis: Is an increase to the retirement age really inevitable?

At what age do you hope to start getting the pension?

Former ANZ chief economist Cameron Bagrie reignited the debate this week when he said it would not be able to remain at 65.

National committed to increasing the age by two years in 20 years' time, but that was scuttled when they were pushed out of government in the most recent election.

Bagrie said, with an ageing population, there would be fewer workers supporting more retirees. "It doesn't look good. Something has to be done. Raising the retirement age at some stage, is, I think, inevitable."

REVIEW: Sonic Cocktails at Hamilton Gardens Arts Festival

What: Sonic Cocktails

Who: Dr Jeremy Mayall, music, and Alexander Williams, flavour.

When: Wednesday night

Where: Pacific Crystal Palace, Hamilton Gardens

Reviewed by Sam Edwards

It is a rare occurrence in the arts, or for entertainments, to have a performance which doesn't need eyes.

Oh, you may need them to enjoy Dr Mayall's tie, but not his show. Audiences have become accustomed to employing only two of their senses, visual and auditory. Occasionally touch intrudes on the performance through the seats we use, or the presence of a bony neighbour, and perfumes and smells surround us, but taste, having something deliberately connected with the show in our mouths?

Never, Until tonight.

Mayall spoke for the event designed jointly by himself and his cullinarily-gifted colleague Alexander Williams. In an interview, Williams said of Hamilton It's always got cool stuff going on involving cool people… and that is what makes the city unique.
