Restaurant review: Delhi Belly, Christchurch

Delhi Belly – what a fantastic name. The sheer ballsiness to name an Indian restaurant after slang for food poisoning is inspiring. I've got no jokes about it, I'm sure they have all been said long ago. And no, there was no post-meal queasiness.

Garden of the week: A Kapiti Coast garden that is ringed by totara

From the road, there are hints that this is no ordinary garden. At first you notice the stone walls and large totara, then the striking entrance gates that mimic the shape of their branches. Save money, get fit and be happy: all the reasons you should have a vege garden

OPINION: When Tim Martin, an Auckland ecologist, took it upon himself to test whether growing your own vegetables is actually worth it, he was pleasantly surprised.

After a year or so of growing vegetables and fruit in his 40sqm Mt Wellington garden, he weighed all the produce, compared it to the price of store-bought food and worked out that he had made $1300 profit after all input costs such as seeds, fertiliser and compost. Loathe your job in your 20s or 30s? That may hurt your health by your 40s

Your first job can be a grind. Many of us start out in gigs that we never thought we'd have to take, maybe because the job market is just too tough, and we need to make ends meet so we don't need to live in our parents' houses anymore. For those of us who are lucky, the situation is temporary and a stepping stone to something we love, but for others it can be the start of many years of a career that we hate.

Cafe chat: What it takes to be voted Christchurch's best cafe

There was lots of love showered on Sydenham cafe Hello Sunday at the Christchurch Hospitality Awards. It won the Press People's Choice award for best cafe, the hospo industry's award for best cafe and the supreme award for best establishment. The cafe's owned by Christopher Penny, Yasmeen Clark and Jonathan Spark. The head chef is Sam Stewart and the barista is Steve Hill.

I asked Spark why the cafe in the old Sunday School building has struck such a chord? What's the secret? He points to a team that cares about each other and the customers. But the location is also a biggie. "We took a run down 1870s Post Office-turned-Sunday School and gave her back her personality," he says. The interior design was a very personal approach by the owners that gives it an original feel. "We really just listened to the building, she had her own story to tell," Spark says.

Neat places to enjoy Mexican food

Good Mexican food is not always easy to find, despite its growing popularity, and anyone who has been to Mexico knows how common it is for restaurants to poorly imitate their cuisine.

Mexican food should be fresh, vibrant, and full of flavour – although this does not always mean spicy. Many traditional Mexican dishes have intense flavours that are built on mild herbs, citrus flavours, and fresh vegetables, which won't leave the mouth burning. Regardless of what ingredients are used to create the dishes, if it isn't fresh, the flavours won't be authentic.

Luckily, Christchurch is becoming a haven for Mexican food lovers, with many restaurants committed to serving up only the most authentic of dishes. Neat Places looks at five of the best Mexican food spots in Christchurch.

A Puhoi homestead that bursts with antique treasures

Time seems to slow down in Puhoi Village. In this enclave 30 minutes north of Auckland, you'll find the ancestors of the Bohemian immigrants who settled here 150 years ago still wearing traditional dress as they wander past the century-old church and the shop that sells oysters and chips wrapped in newspaper. Children still learn the language of their homeland. In summer there's a wood-chopping competition on the lawn of the old pub, and in winter you can take your favourite game dish to the wild food night. "It's neat," says Bob Gilhooly. "It's like something you'd see in a village in Europe."
